First Taste: A Muse Red 2025, Ten Years in the Making

By Yiannis Karakasis MW

The story of A Muse Red began nearly ten years ago, around the time Muses Estate bottled the first vintage of its A Muse rosé. The idea evolved alongside the Zacharias family’s belief in the future of Greek grape varieties.

“We currently export to 22 countries, and what we see is very clear,” says Stelios Zacharias. “A Cabernet or Chardonnay from Greece no longer has the same appeal in international markets as a wine based on Greek varieties. The future of Greek wine lies in its identity.”

The estate already produced Mouchtaro, the rare red variety closely associated with the Valley of the Muses in Boeotia. Its acidity and distinctive earthy, leathery character offered an obvious starting point, though the family wanted more structure, volume and fruit flavour in the red wine they had in mind. Around seven years ago, they planted Mavrotragano specifically for this project.
