Argyros Heritage Vinsanto: Historic Santorini Vintages back to 1947

A blind tasting of ten historic Vinsanto wines from Estate Argyros, including rare Santorini vintages from 1947 to 1982.

Argyros Heritage Vinsanto is one of the most important recent developments for Santorini’s historic sweet wine category. Vinsanto is among the great wines of not only Greece but of the world. Yet internationally, it remains less understood than it deserves. It carries the island’s volcanic austerity, sun-dried concentration and oxidative depth, and at its highest level is a memorable wine with tremendous ageing potential. Literally, these wines are immortal.

Estate Argyros has long been one of the reference names for this style because it approaches Vinsanto as a wine of balance, not simply of concentration. Sweetness is only one part of the equation. The real difficulty lies elsewhere: in controlling volatile acidity, guiding oxidative development, preserving freshness and allowing time to build complexity without the wine becoming heavy or tired.

This is precisely where Argyros stands apart. Over decades, the winery has built a deep library of old Vinsanto vintages, and the recent release of the first Heritage bottlings, from 1947, 1974 and 1982, gives that history a new public presence. More releases are expected in the future, and their significance goes beyond rarity. They help move Vinsanto from the margins of the sweet wine discussion into the wider conversation on fine historic wines.
