Beyond Expectations: Papagiannakos Honores 2015 and Savatiano's Renaissance

In the dynamic world of Greek wine, a remarkable transformation is underway, with the once-underestimated Savatiano grape now commanding attention and acclaim. At the forefront of this progress is Honores 2015 from Papagiannakos Winery, a wine that resonates with distinction and character.

Decades ago, the notion of Savatiano achieving such intricate complexity would have seemed implausible. Yet, Papagiannakos Winery, guided by Vassilis Papagiannakos, reshaped perceptions with their 2008 Savatiano, sparking a conversation about the grape's uncharted potential. No longer confined to the shadow of Retsina, Savatiano now asserts itself as a variety capable of greatness.

Honores 2015 is a wine of many layers, revealing something new with each sip. Aromatically, it combines ripe apple, honeysuckle, and toasted brioche. On the palate, it is complex, energetic, and long—all within a modest 12.5% abv! With its structured profile and high level of freshness, it promises another 8-10 years of ageing potential. 

While not every Savatiano wine may reach the pinnacle of Honores 2015, top examples crafted from top-notch fruit and meticulous care in the vineyard and winery can indeed be transformative. However, there's a lingering concern: the price. Priced around 40-45 euros, Honores faces stiff competition from the allure of Santorini or international white wines. Yet, it offers something irreplaceable – the essence of Savatiano captured within a single bottle.
