The wines of Attica through the eyes of the producers
by Yiannis Karakasis MW
In recent years, the wines of Attica, with Savatiano as their central focus, have been undergoing a quiet yet significant transition. The conversation is gradually shifting towards more artisan expressions, with a clear emphasis on terroir, the vineyard, and mindful winemaking.
It is not an exaggeration to say, or rather to admit, that Savatiano has today reached levels of complexity that would have been difficult to imagine just a few years ago. Not even its most consistent supporters would have expected it.
The recent, carefully curated conference on the wines of Attica, a collaboration between Proto Thema and the Region of Attica that I had the pleasure of moderating, together with the series of articles that followed, highlighted something rarely captured so clearly in public discourse around Greek wine. Not a temporary trend or a communication narrative, but a framework of thought about the present and the future of the region. Through different voices, a common direction emerged. Savatiano is now treated as a conscious choice, the result of specific viticultural and winemaking decisions. And yes, to a large extent, it has now convinced even the most sceptical. This is called evolution.
Attica today is not trying to prove its existence. It is trying to define more precisely what it represents and where it wants to go. And this shift is now beginning to be reflected not only in the glass, but also in public dialogue.
