Thymiopoulos from Naoussa makes a move in Rapsani
Exciting news for Greek wine even in August! Apostolos Thymiopoulos, producer of game changer Naoussa, Earth and Sky has decided to invest in the Rapsani PDO region.
The corporate identity is called Terra Olympus, with Thymiopoulos cooperating with Konstantinos Liapis in the viticultural part. Liapis has a long history in Rapsani region by producing wine there for many decades. Talking to Thymiopoulos he sounded very excited about this new venture, commenting that the 7 hectares vineyards are located in some of the highest and best terroirs of the zone at 480 m. ''Some vineyards are overlooking Mt.Olympus while some others Pineios River. I am thrilled that I am going to work with old vines (some of them of 70 years age)'', he added.
Thymiopoulos emphasizes on the very good relationships with the other producers of the region, arguing that by producing top quality wines he will promote the region in international markets.
What to expect? Natural cultivation, low yields, natural winemaking with emphasis on Xinomavro grape which is the major ingredient in the Rapsani blend giving power and structure, experiments with indigenous yeast from Mt. Olympus and at least two labels one premium and one mid market. Total production is roughly estimated around 35.000-40.000 bottles per annum.
The 2016 vintage will be vinified in the new Terra Olympus winery in a restored warehouse near the Rapsani train station.
Various pictures of the vineyards follow.
