When International Grapes Become ”Local”

In Greece, the debate around international grape varieties has always been controversial and often sparks heated arguments. Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon were planted eagerly here, just as they were in many parts of the world, but they are rarely ideally suited to most Greek terroirs. Isolated experiments with Petit Verdot, Tempranillo, or Sangiovese have yet to deliver compelling results.
